The Multi-stakeholder workshop: Monitoring and Reporting ofSDG 6.4 target in the MENA region
The event is a multi-stakeholder workshop focused on monitoring and reporting progress on SDG 6.4 (water use efficiency and water scarcity) in the Near East and North Africa region. Organized by FAO as the custodian agency for these indicators, the workshop brings together country focal points, NGOs, academics, and intergovernmental organizations to strengthen national and regional capacities in water data collection, analysis, and reporting. The aim is to improve the use of indicators 6.4.1 (water use efficiency) and 6.4.2 (water stress) for policymaking on agriculture, water management, and climate change. This initiative responds to pressing regional challenges such as population growth, climate change, and increasing freshwater scarcity, which threaten both economic and social development.
Over two days, participants reviewed methodologies, shared country experiences, and identified common challenges in monitoring SDG 6.4. A special case study from Algeria was highlighted, focusing on the disaggregation of indicator 6.4.2 (water stress). This example showed how Algeria is advancing efforts to refine water data estimation and reporting despite structural and environmental constraints. Alongside Algeria’s case, sessions covered technical aspects of data collection (renewable freshwater resources, irrigation, and environmental flows) as well as the AQUASTAT system that underpins FAO’s monitoring efforts. The workshop also promoted collaboration through regional platforms like the Water Scarcity Initiative, ESCWA, and the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development, aiming to improve response rates to FAO’s questionnaires and ensure more reliable regional reporting. The expected outcome is stronger technical capacity across countries, leading to more informed policies for sustainable water and food security in the region
